Feeding regime for budgerigars

If you have decided to acquire a budgerigar, a common question arises: what should you feed them? Of course, food for budgerigars should be of high quality and diverse. After all, the health of your bird depends on their diet. Before answering this question, it is important to understand some peculiarities of budgerigars. For example, birds have a higher body temperature compared to other animals. The normal body temperature of birds is around 41-42 degrees Celsius, which is due to their physiological characteristics. The high temperature promotes intensive digestion and metabolism in the bird's body. Since budgerigars lead an active lifestyle, requiring a lot of calories even for flying, their food is digested quite quickly - approximately within 2-3 hours. Therefore, it is important to replenish their food supplies in a timely manner.

It is quite evident that proper feeding plays a significant role in the care of these birds.

So, what should you feed budgerigars?

The basis of their diet is a seed mix, which includes various types of millet, canary seed, oats, flaxseed, sesame, hemp seed, meadow grass seeds, etc. Pet stores offer a wide range of bird food for budgerigars, and the specific choice depends on the owners' preferences and the bird's tastes.

In addition to the main seed-based diet, you can offer budgerigars dandelion stems and leaves, clover. To do this, collect the necessary leaves, dry them, and grind them. The obtained powder can be added to their regular diet. Fruits and berries are also very beneficial for all birds. However, not all budgerigars may be willing to eat them. Therefore, it is better to accustom the bird to such treats from an early age. On the other hand, salty food and pure salt should never be offered to budgerigars. Otherwise, it can lead to negative consequences and even the death of the bird.

Moreover, when forming a diet plan for budgerigars, certain factors should be taken into account: the bird's lifestyle, age, living conditions, seasons, etc. It is also not recommended to feed budgerigars the same food constantly, as a monotonous diet can lead to stomach problems. Therefore, it is necessary to regularly change the food for budgerigars, and provide them with vitamins.
